KINDLER WICKING FOR OIL BURNING STOVES & RANGES

The old "wickless" oil stoves from the 1920's through the 1950's did in fact use a wick - an asbestos, edge burning "kindler" wick. Different heights and lengths of asbestos wicking were used by various stoves depending upon the size of the burner. A person could walk into a hardware store anywhere, buy a box of asbestos roll wicking of the right height and 5 1/2 feet long, and cut the length of wick they needed off the roll.  Product liability lawyers did away with asbestos wicking years ago.

Burners using kindler wicking MUST HAVE the precise width of wick for which they were designed!   If the wick is 1/8'' too narrow it will be too low in the wick slot and the flame will never adjust high enough for proper cooking.  If the wick is 1/8'' too wide it will be 1/8'' too high in the slot and the flame will be so high that is cannot be controlled, producing a sooty, incomplete burn that is terrible.  A wick of the correct height will be fed fuel via gravity flow through a needle valve controlling the precise rate of fuel flow:  THAT is what establishes the height of flame and therefore the heat output of a burner.  Please do not guess the width of wick your stove requires - measure the depth of the slot as shown below.

If your burner has an old burned down wick stuck in the wick slot channel it can be removed by using a bent piece of stiff wire to hook and grab the chunks of old wicking.

Directions for using a ''wickless'' stove using kindler wicking are explained in an original Florence stove manual kindly provided by Kerry White.  Click here for the Adobe version of the manual.  Your stove will undoubtedly be different than the Florence stove illustrated in the manual, but the principles of operation are the same.

More information is available for Butterfly gravity flow stoves.  Newly made but they have exactly the same operating principles as kindler wick stoves made a century ago.  Butterfly #2418 Double Burner Stove.

I  have kindler wicking in stock that is high quality, especially woven fiberglass with copper reinforcing wire woven inside. >>

<< Measure depth of slot and add 1/8", so the wick looks like that at left when seated to full depth - just a little exposed, a little lower than the outer rim.  Click photo to enlarge.

Check list below to ensure correct width before ordering, please.

OUT-OF-US SHIPPING!!! All of the wicks below are over the 3/4'' maximum thickness for shipping out of the US (Canada or overseas) as ''flats''' and therefore must be mailed at the box/package rate...which is more expensive.  Please add $4.00 per order to cover this expense.

All "wickless" oil stoves and ranges will have vastly cleaner burning characteristics and longer wick life if nothing but Low Odor Mineral Spirits are used in them.

The following wick guide came from a box of Flamemaster Asbestos Wicking, "For Oil Burning Stoves and Ranges, Combination Circulating Heaters," date unknown (but before 1955), manufactured by "Atlas Asbestos Company, North Wales, Penna, U.S.A."
